Plant Stand

My latest design is this 40 inch tall plant stand. The top is birds eye maple and measures 10 inches square with a 1 inch overhang. The rails (4 inches wide) and legs (13/16 inches square) are cherry with walnut plugs on the shelf attachment. The stand is finished with two coats of sanding sealer and two coats of blonde shellac then waxed and buffed.

I am presently designing a hall table which will have an elliptical top. Will follow up soon with that design. With winter coming I am in hopes of spending more time in the shop as have several pieces that I want to build as well as continuing to turn some bowls and some xmas ornaments.  It is always good to see sawdust and chips fly.

What would you call it?

My latest project. Not really sure what one would call it but consists of 344 pieces of cherry, walnut, maple and bloodwood. Still a little more sanding and than a finish. leaning towards an oil finish either danish natural or boiled linseed.














                     
     
 It stands 8 inches tall and is 10 inches in diameter. The base is 4 3/4 inches and the opening in the top is 2 1/4 inches.

Segmented Bowl

Now that all major machines from the workshop have been moved though the shop itself isn't finished and there are many hand tools still to move I just had to try turning a segmented bowl to make sure my tools and brain still worked properly. Besides the turner's club will start meeting in two weeks so needed something for show and tell. I hadn't really turned anything since last spring.  This bowl contains 397 pieces. It is made with yellow birch, walnut and maple segments with solid walnut bottom.


Oh speaking of Turner's club starting meeting again the President's challenge for over the summer was to turn a lidded box so  tried this new design last weekend. It is turned from a yellow birch burl with bloodwood handle on lid.

Cherry Burl Bowl

This a cherry burl which was bought by a gentle man from Farmington, ME for his sister's birthday. I believe he delivered personally to her in Conn.

Desk chair

I have been awhile since posting work to my blog as I have been busy working on the retirement home.This is the chair that I built last fall to go with my wife's desk. It is made from cherry to match the desk with a leather cushioned seat.

Desk Set

This desk set is made from a cherry burl and finished with four coats of blonde shellac. The brass posts hold twelve to fifteen business cards.  It is fourteen inches in length, 4 1/2 inch in overall width and 2 inches thick. The brass pen holder is inserted at an angle and there is a recess in center for paper clips.

18th Century Style Secretary

This desk which my wife is keeping is made with cherry (secondary woods are popular and butternut) and all hardware is solid brass. It has taking roughly four months to build. This didn't consume all that time as you have to wait for glue to dry as well as the finish. During those times I have continued to turn a few bowls and made a pen/business card holder out of a beautiful cherry burl which I will post later.
